Alternators
The alternator is part of your Nissan vehicle's charging system, and one that's extremely important. After all, it's what produces the electricity that your vehicle's battery, accessories, and systems require. It does so by taking the mechanical energy of the engine and converting it into electricity.
How Your Alternator Works
It all starts when the crankshaft takes the vertical motion from the engine pistons and transforms it into rotary motion, which moves a belt that's attached to a pulley located on the rotor shaft. There are magnetic coils inside the rotor shaft, which get agitated by the motion and produce a magnetic field. A rectifier captures that as AC power and turns it into the DC power that feeds your wipers, battery, headlights, power windows, entertainment system, and more.
Learn the Signs of a Bad Alternator
Alternators don't last forever, though. When yours starts to fail, systems will stop working. That's not good. Signs of this include:
- Fading or dimming headlights
- Sound system trouble
- Power windows stop working
- A whining sound coming from the engine
- Your battery repeatedly dies
- You notice a burning smell coming from under the hood
